Description

This unit is designed to introduce key principles of nuclear science, engineering and technology, in the context of applications, including:-Energy from nuclear reactions-Diagnostics and therapy in medicine-Radioactive waste treatment and disposal-Nuclear defence and non-proliferation-Radiation protection. These topics will be studied in relation to their socio-economic and environmental impact. The module will be taught primarily through lectures and inquiry based case studies, with contribution from external experts. The aims of this module are to develop: - An understanding of the structure of the atomic nucleus and radioactive decay processes - An holistic understanding of the nuclear fuel cycle - An understanding of the nuclear reactor systems and power generation - An understanding of materials design and performance parameters for nuclear applications
